So, the first international exhibition to grace miss annabel dee* has been and gone - and what a success it was!

My friend and fellow ceramicist Alia Pialtos attended Central Saint Martins for a term.  It was here we met, and three years later, we decide to curate a small show over here in the UK.

8 graduates from the ceramic program at the University of Massachusetts exhibited small works at the gallery last week.  It was a breath of fresh air to see what people my age who were studying ceramics were making across the pond

This is it! we are now officially open! THREE CHEERS HIPHIP.. HOORAY! After months and months of saying we'd be open next week we are finally up and trading!

The opening party was held last night, and if i dont mind saying so myself was a rip roaring success!  I have a few photos, but I had a professional team come along and film the night to make an advert promoting the gallery and they took photos as well.

Here we go.. a little bit about the gallery etc...

The gallery will be showcasing an example of Annabel's work which has  been exhibited in places such as Sotheby's London as well as New York   and early next year at No. 10 Downing Street.  Annabel has had many a  prestigious client commissioning her for a unique ceramic piece for  their home or office.  Alongside Annabel there will be a permanent  retail area which will sell prints, jewellery and homewares from other  emerging and established artists.

Annabel an ex Southend High School student graduated from the  prestigious Central Saint Martins 2 years ago before embarking on a long  and hard renovation project of the shop along Leigh Road to change it  into an art gallery and studio spaces for fellow like minded artists: "I  couldn't believe the interest in the studio areas.  Obviously Leigh has  a hidden army of creative people waiting to be exposed!  I hope the  appearance of my gallery and others such as Studio 3 and the White Wall  Space in Leigh and gallery 11 in Westcliff will encourage others to take  a look at some art and get involved somehow.  Infact I cant believe the  interest in the whole project, from day one we've had people putting  their heads through the door asking to builders what's going on, and  still i get people stopping and peering through the windows!"

The studios have a kiln available to rent for those who need access to  one at very reasonable rates.  A glazing facility (compressor and glaze  gun) is also available to use, and so it a small teaching space if  anybody is interested in sharing their knowledge of a craft with others,  Miss Annabel Dee* is able to accommodate 3 adults (5 children), again  at very reasonable rates.

Whilst clearing the very over grown garden and cutting down a rather large and unruly 'bush' the gardeners come back to me and asked me if I knew I had a two storey building at the back of the garden!

We were very suprised to say the least,  it was like the crooked house once they'd pulled all the vines away, all lopsided and looking very sorry for itself.  However it worked out in our favour, because it meant I could have a few more studio spaces, and these ones are self contained!

Here are some photos of the two story building before it got finished.  Well, its half way through. I didnt even think about taken photos in the beginning, scatterbrain!

I will go to the studios and get some 'after' shots tomorrow so you can see how far we've come.

A local newspaper article covering the opening of my gallery

I was quite lucky when it came to getting a piece in the local paper about the gallery finally opening.  You may remember I had a Pop-Up Shop in the same space a few months back during the Leigh Art Trail and the paper covered the story then.  Ever since the journalist, Hannah Marsh has been walking passed peeking in the windows to watch my progress..  So when I emailed her the details of the opening she was more than happy to oblige.

We had a lovely chat, she actually came to the gallery to talk to me which was really nice rather than a telephone interview and her being there, really gave her a feel for the place.

Its finally arrived! The grand opening of my gallery and studios! ta daaaaaaa!  This is predominantly the reason I havent been blogging for a while, I've had so much to do, I just havent had time to sit and write anything - which is a shame because I havent kept you all updated! boo!.. Well here it is in the next couple of posts, whats been happening.

I cant believe how long its been since my last post.. a whole 44 days ago!

I feel quite bad actually!  I started this blog when I was still at university and I vowed that I was going to put a new drawing up a day!  Well, that didnt happen that's for sure, but i think ive been pretty consistent adding stuff every now and then recording my progress and achievements, but 44 days! Sheesh!

What have I been doing?

To be honest, not much!  Just general life!  I got a job at the local Co-op! (wohoo) whilst I wait for the studios to be finished.  I've been a bit downhearted about it all really, thinking about chucking the clay covered towel in and just gettting myself a simple 9-5 with guaranteed money coming in each month, a pension and company car, but then I stumble upon an old sketchbook from a few years ago, and realise that ive got so many ideas still, so many things I want to try out and develop.  When I dont do any hands on clay for a while, i forget what I'm missing!  Cant wait to get into the studio and get cracking again!!

Below is a pic of the outside studio space taken roughly 1 month ago.  Seriously, you would not believe what it looks like now.  Its like a whole different back garden!  Hopefully ill get down there at some point and get some snaps of how it looks now.  I'm very excited! 

Tuesday is the day that the builder, Barry, said it'll be clear to start  showing people round to rent the spaces and also to start moving my  stuff in from the other studio! EXCITING!

AND I promise to start blogging more again.  Its because I havent got a 'smartphone' with no proper internet!  I cant constantly check this site and facebook and twitter!... its a nightmare

Danny made me a lovely dinner the other night - cordon bleu chicken, stuffed with boursin garlic cheese and wrapped in bacon - with a lovely little (welcome) addition!

He later told me that the cucumbers were on special at the Co-op for 10p per cumber! hehe who said romance is dead!

Artside 2011

This year I am lucky enough to be art of ARTSIDE - 1sy July 16th July. Basically a Southend on Sea Art Trail, with artists working with venues along Southend High Street to produce artwork relevant to that particular place. This year's theme is 'PAUSE':

"The title PAUSE reflects the site-specific nature of Artside, the exhibited work will be thought-provoking, a surprise or will simply encourage us to stop and view familiar places in new light. Artists will be working with the venues creating site-led work, either related to the type of business, to the individual stories of people working there or responding to the space itself."

My venue is The Railway Hotel, Scratton Road, just opposite Southend Central Railway Station. Its a lovely pub owned by Hoxton Bar And Grill. I look forward to speaking to the owners and producing ceramic vessels which captures the essence and the memories the Railway holds.

The pieces have to be installed by 1st July, so I am in the process of making some 'work in progress' vessels which I can place in the venue, perhaps on the piano, or behind the bar whilst i collect stories and ephemeral matter.

Central Saint Martins BA (Hons) Ceramic Design Degree show

What a great standard this years graduans have set!  Some really lovely work over at Southampton Row, at what is set to be the buildings last ever degree show before the university moves over to Kings Cross.

The work was really colourful and different and it was great to see everyone so enthusiastic and positive.  Just what I needed to keep me motivated and on track for the Grand opening of my gallery in August.

Spotted some potential pieces I would like to showcase and fingers crossed, we'll be able to come to a deal.

That was the whole point of the gallery really, to showcase up and coming emerging ceramic talent, as I didnt really know where to start once I'd left uni -  If it hadn't been for Janice Blackburn, and my exhibition at Sotheby's - I probably would still be wondering how to get into gallerys and find commissions!

Pop-Up Show!

So I did it!  I actually managed to get everything ready in time!  I was still at the gallery at 1am the previous morning before the opening, washing the windows with slightly tipsy people over at Tigerlilys as an audience. Thats a bar opposite by the way.

  I couldn't have done it without the help of the wonderful Danny!  He helped me with all the handy man duties, as when it comes to wood nails and screwdrivers, I draw a blank and all common sense goes through the window! So again, Thank you very much Dan for all your hard work.

I'd like to give the builders and the electrical and all the men that have been working on the gallery a big thumbs up! You've done such a good job - it doesnt look like the same place.  I wish i'd taken some more 'before' photos, but never mind, youll have to use your imagination.  The transformation of the space is amazing!  Before, it was one room with rotting floorboards & joists, anaglypta wallpaper, french doors boarded up, rotting window frames.. all the usual pre-renovation features or failures and now, well now its a lovely, modern & dare i say sophisticated space perfect for showing works of art.

The Pop-Up Exhibition went really really well.  

I had lots of positive feedback when I told people my ideas for the shop.  They were pleased it wasnt going to be another hairdressers or takeaway!  Alot of people thought thats what it was going to be - a chinese, beacause ive got a hatch in the wall!  It divides the shop from the working studio spaces and will provide a window for people to watch me working and for me to see out into the gallery/shop, see whats going on.

Thats right, the gallery is well and truly on its way to being.. well half decent!! As you all should know, I have a space in Leigh on Sea which I am turning into Studio & Gallery Space..

In the meantime whilst it's still being decorated, I'm holding a POP UP SHOW!!

Here is a mini press release I have written for the day:

An exciting new venture sees Annabel putting ceramics on hold to renovate an old shop along Leigh Road and turn the space into an artist led collective and gallery & studio space. "When I left university, I wanted to be exhibited in galleries, but they seemed to take too much commission unfortunately! I want to create a platform for emerging ceramicists & artists to showcase their work at a reasonable rate. I also wanted a studio space where ceramicists and other artists could work together, inspire and help other, just like we did at university"

"Miss Annabel Dee* presents..." is a Pop Up art exhibitions run alongside the Leigh Art Trail 11th-19th June. The show consists of up & coming artists of the area as a sneak peek of what the future holds for this Leigh Road Gallery.

Julie Spurgeon, also a fellow Leigh dweller and Central Saint Martins graduate will be showcasing her Material Pleasure fine bone china tea set, which is currently in an exhibition in Fortnum & Masons, alongside Annabel’s unique cylindrical vessels. East End Prints, the number one preferred supplier of quirky, graphic prints have some of their artists work on display also.

The Leigh Road gallery will be holding an Opening Party on Saturday 11th June from 10am onwards.

I'm on the look out for submissions for a SATELLITE EVENT which will be held alongside the LEIGH ART TRAIL 11th - 19th June 2011.

I'm organising a POP-UP SHOW in a space in Leigh Road.  You work will be exhibited alongside local ceramicists & artists for the week.  It will provide you exposure within the local and hopefully further afield community.  I'm after predominately ceramics, but other mediums will DEF be considered - perhaps you have some work on a seaside theme? Are you an illustrator?  painter? sculptor? Again, dont worry if not, all works will be considered!!

MoMac Pop Up Exhibition - ON NOW!

A few days ago I found out that 5, yes 5 of my vessels had been selected by gallerist Roberta Moore to be part of the 2 day pop up exhibition she is curating.

Roberta specializes in showcasing emerging and established British and International artists.
The artists exhibiting in the show include Paul Robinson (who has exhibited extensively in New York, Los Angeles, London and Hong Kong and has collectors that include Sydney Pollack, Renee Zellweger and Jason Priestley), Stuart Semple (who has shown in a string of international exhibitions and Biennales and is collected by celebrities such as Debbie Harry and Sienna Miller) and Roni Stretch (whose work is held in numerous public collections in the US and Europe as well as private collections worldwide).

I was lucky enough to be involved in part of the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain along the South Bank over the last couple of weeks.
Metal an arts orgainisation in Southend, my home town managed to secure the beach huts along the embankment for 4 months.

My work was shown in the Gallery Hut for 2 weekends over the two April Bank Holidays.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Just before the Royal Wedding, I took a trip 'oop north' to Wakefield to deliver 15 vessels to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to be displayed in their Shop Showcase from 9th May - 22nd July. I still dont quite trust the postman to not break my stuff, and a little break is just waht i needed.

It was such a beautiful day we decided to stay up there and make the most of the park. It's set in 500 acres of rolling rural park land. I really couldnt believe how lovely it was, the sky was a piercing blue and there were sheep with lambs roaming the land! I really do feel honoured to have work exhibited here!

After the park visit we didnt really want to drive the 4 hours back home, so we decided to drive through the Peak District, somewhere I've never been before, but Danny had when he was younger. A little mid-week adventure.

Stopped at the side of the road to take a photo of the peak district! haha.. cars were roaring by!

We drove to Buxton - i recognised this name from the bottled water, and loved the fact there were railway arches - viaducts? with houses and buildings built literally underneath them, right on top.

It was all very reminisant of the Railway Children, dark stone cottages, bright green greenery! - have i got the right area? Anyways, next we drove through Bakewell (home of the infamous tarts!) and ended in Matlock Bath where we were to stay the night in a little B&B.

Danny and I have decided we must be getting 'old', as we keep stopping to take photos of a mountain, or of a lovely waterfall - those typical holiday snaps you have of each other standing next to an area of interest - A PHOTO OPPURTUNITY perhaps? haha, ah well, we embraced it and loved it!

I'd def recommend a visit to the Park and to the Peak District. Really loved it!

It's been a hectic month! Excuses, Excuses I know! The boy's sister got married the weekend before the Royal Wedding, so I guess everything has been revolving around weddings at the moment and I kinda got caught up in it...

I was wandering around the Westbourne Grove area yesterday, and I think its time to move my inspiration west, away from east London -just for the time being of course!

The houses are DIVINE. When I grow up this is where I want to be.

Anyway, I love looking at windows and doors and chimneys and ariels.. so watch this space.. new work should be evolving soon!

debut contemporary - workshop with Paul Barthaud

Tuesday 29^th March’s Workshop led by successful Auctioneer, Art Handler and specialist Cataloguer, Paul Barthaud (www.paulbarthaud.co.uk), demonstrated that all artists should be prepared, at least with an understanding of the runnings, for Auction Houses at an early stage. Barthaud also stressed the importance of what he described as the “nuclear option” – having a clear voice as an artist and a control over the price, placement and integrity of one’s artworks.

Some key market trends were noted as to the boom in art sales in particular countries in the last decade and following Jean-Phillippe Vernes talk, the value in remaining respectful to your collectors whilst maintaining a strategic business mind is clearly of high importance.

Sad day for Ravensbourne..

Well, Ive just seen a photograph of my old college - Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication - where I studied for a year working towards my Diploma in Art Foundation... and it seems that Rave. is no more! The whole college is being relocated to Greenwich.

What a shame!.. Never mind onwards and upwards i suppose..

Funnily enough, Central Saint Martins, my old university is also relocating, well the University of the Arts colleges are all merging and moving to a brand spanking new building in Kings Cross. I still feel so sad though, the buildings (maybe not Rave. as it was more or less 1960s new - at a guess) but certainly for the building along Southampton Row, its so beautiful and old and seeped in history, parquet flooring, wooden banisters, stone coving - ah well.. Hopefully they wont be as quick to tear down this building.

This was my first foray into the galleries of trendy East London. And it went rather well! The Event was even listed on the Design Week Blog!

The gallery was packed all night and I even made a sale. The work there is pretty good as well. A particular favourite of mine is Kelly Davit's "Red Hat". So lifelike! (see below)

Anyway, the show is open until 13th March, so if you're in London I'd def recommend going and have a little nose around.

Anyway, it was here that I revealed my newest piece of work 'Mulberry Bush'. It is part of the Slugs, Snails & Puppy dog Tails collection and it pokes fun of today's Mulberry bag culture. The ceramic vessel is emblazoned with the slogan 'here we go round the mulberry bush' and features children prancing round a bush sprouting the infamous bags.

Well, ive been in the studio making some smaller vessels for a more 'commercial' side to my pieces.

These are the Slugs&Snails range.

The only difference to these vessels from the original range is that there is no surface relief, and of course the size. This makes them so much easier to reproduce.

These will be exhibited in a showcase at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the Summer - they'll be on sale too!

PRESS RELEASE FOR PULSE, EARLS COURT, 6-8th JUNE

Annabel Johnson is launching a new range of vessels at Pulse this summer entitled - Slugs, Snails & Puppy dog Tails.

The new range focuses on a humorous narrative to childhood and the ever debated question of growing up too quickly.

Two new brooch ranges are also being launched - All Washed Up! -a limited edition range made from pottery found on the shores of Anglesey, and What’s Up Dollface? - each unique dollface conjouring nostaligic thoughts.

A graduate of Central Saint Martin’s, Annabel’s work features a range of creative mediums combining surface, graphic design and photography with traditional ceramic qualities such as relief and own recipe glazes to produce unique and thought provoking items, which will help people remember places, people, memories and eras which are now long gone - all in a tongue in cheek kind of way.

Annabel is also showing her degree show collection ”The Chewing Gum Floors’ - a collection which caught the eye of Janice Blackburn, and was featured in her exhibition ‘small show Huge Talent’ at Sotheby’s last summer. The collections narrative uncovers her family’s memories of life in the pubs and clubs of the East End of London in the 1960s.

Having been dubbed ‘the next Grayson Perry’ Annabel’s work is not something to be missed!

Tectonic Plates Exhibition : NYC ii

I took some photos of the rest of the exhibition. It really was awesome! (haha obviously spent to long in the US, starting to use the lingo!). After speaking to Paul of the New English about the response to the exhibition - it seemed very promising! Some nice little snippets of info and leads - all which sounded brilliant if they all came off!.. Piers Wedgwood walked into the room just as I was leaving...

Surprisingly, as I was browsing the catalogue, I can across some designs by a fellow CSM Ceramic Design graduate - Julie Spurgeon! (she graduated the year before me!) I didnt even know she had anything to do with it! Unfortunately, I had already left the exhibition so I couldnt look at her designs in detail, but they weer very good designs, hand drawn bumblebees and flies..

So, only two days to go til I'm in the Big Apple, which is gonna be wicked!

Still have no plan of action, apart from eat well, drink well, shop, sightsee and have fun with my mum, auntie and mums best friend!! It'll be like a random glamorous Sex and the City!!

But of course, the REAL reason we are going to New York is to see The New English exhibition at The New York Table Top Show at 41Madison - which just so happens to be featuring two of my surface designs (have i mentioned this before? hehe!?)

Ive produced a mini portfolio/leave behind to give to little boutiques in Greenwich Village etc etc I'm also going to take some of my Whats up Dollface brooches! eeek! everyone loves a freebie!...

Had a NIGHTMARE..well not quite a nightmare, perhaps a bad dream... I went to pick up them at the arranged time (after 4pm on friday) to find that the machine had broken down!!!! eeeek! so now i have to go and pick them MONDAY before 12! eeeeeeeek! cutting it a bit fine no!?

Tectonic Plates

The New English: Tectonic Plates project is based on a small selection of briefs to create some Illustrated plates for a exhibition and book run by Paul Bishop from a company called The New English. I decided to enter two designs.

The first was based on "Hello - the lost art of greeting" I focused on the fact that Red telephone boxes around London are disappearing fast. It used to be “Good to Talk” as bob hoskins used to say, drawing inspiration from stereotypical London graffiti and housing, i created this beaut:

The second design : "Is the future already here?" sorta is based on the redevelopment of Old London town into high rise tower blocks of the future and the fact that 1984 Big Brother is always watching our every move. I also wanted to put in the fact that kids are growin' up way too quickly, arriving at their 'futures; way before they should...

Just what I needed following recent events..

Its the first time she's seen my studio, and as you can see, we were very productive - as usual!

And then spent the night dancing my troubles away, even though she had to be on a train at 8.30am to get into work the next morning!

Came across these lovely silk scarves on one of my favourite blogs. They are by a guy called Philippe Roucou, just love the subject matter of the photos!

Thats the thing with polaroids, you can take the most mundane photograph of like, a bed (as above) and it still look incredibly intriguing!

I have a slight strange obsession with polaroids at the moment, I want to try out some polaroid transfers onto the clay surface.. but i cant seem to find any polaroid cameras or film that does the job!! I think we've got an old polaroid camera knocking around somewhere, so at least I can attempt it with that once i buy some films.

Just love the effect polaroids have! Think they would suit my work perfectly! Best get polaroid camera hunting!

studio productive-ness..

Spent 6 hours in the studio today making moulds in preparation for my 'Whats Up Dollface' collection and also my next cylindrical vessel collection about childhood!

LOVED IT! forgot how much i like getting my hands dirty and actually MAKING things! Though Ive got a bit of a back ache from hunchin' over a bit too much..

But all in all a productive day - if interspersed with stints on PhotoBooth... aah i do love that programme! i could sit on it all day playing with the effects... Anyway. 11 moulds were made! PHEW, cant wait to put them to good use...

aaaah, havent really had time to update my blog unfortuantly or go to the sudio muchh, as I have been so busy at my 9-5 job at Garda trying to earn money to make my ceramics work! hehe..

But never fear, I'm still here, and still raring to go:

* Ive been scouring ETSY for dolls heads/faces for my new jewellery collection 'Whats up Dollface' and also my new vessel collection - Untitled at the moment, but regarding children growing up too quickly...yes they are kinda FREAKY in this form, but once I have worked my magic on them... you'll see!!

* I'm awaiting confirmation and publication on the George Bamford exhibition/book, which should be finished in a couple of months..

*GREAT NEWS - A few months back I was approached by Paul Bishop of The New English collaborative at the Central Saint Martins stand at New Designers. He was interested in my work and wanted me to enter a, not a competition, but to submit some designs for a project he was managing 'TECTONIC PLATES'. I entered straight away in June-ish and havent really heard anything since... UNTIL NOW!

The compnay has manufactured almost all the plates and they look wonderful apparently, and will make a brilliant exhibition. Which leads me to...

It seems that the exhibition/trade show in New York! NEW YORK!! (brilliant!!) Starting 13th April at 41 Madison wow! Cannot believe it. I just hope I havent got my wires crossed!

There is also an exhibition in Stoke on Trent 27th March

I seem to be attending quite a few social gatherings at the moment!

Last week was Kayleys boofday, where I saw the uni girls for the first time in what, say 6 months!! AND the first time ive seen Claire for yonks!... she went out to the US of A for a few months... was a wickeeed good night though, even thought it was a sad occasion as well - Chrissie's going away for a year!!! AND the uni lot left for the last train home! LEIGHTWEIGHTS!

oh. What is it about bars that people thing they can just push past you, or elbow you or stumble back into you... grrr... really got my goat on this occassion, dunno why - but i got my elbows out to the ready and got stuck in! jostle* was the word of the evening! haha!

workin' 9 - 5 what a way to make a livin'

So ive gone and got myself a 'proper job' working in an office - albeit its a creative office - Garda Design, Billericay - They're great there!

Here's their website, but its being updated as we speak (infact ive been having a little dabble in designing it!..). INFACT Garda is going through a whole re-brand, which is great, because I get to see what goes into changing all the logos, letter heads, marketing materials etc...

Thats my seat there... the lovely empty one, nearest the left!

I've been up to London to meet a client UK P&I Club, which is part of Thomas Miller - a big shipping insurance firm in Fenchurch Street. Ha! I felt really grown up - 'A client meeting in London'.  Basically they just had to proof read and sign off some pages of the rule book we've had printed, and actually today I spent most of the afternoon cutting up the 'Dummy'... (to make sure the pages collated)

As much as im enjoying it - its really taking it out of me! After 6 months idly popping into the studio when I wanted, i now have a 7am wake up! phew! catch a train by 8.26... be in work by 9 have to work all day til 5.30, then get the train, home by 6.30! eeeeek! and then its bedtime!! hahaha 'that's life ey!'

ah leave me alone - ive been in education since i was... what 4?! this is the first time in 20 years I haven't been allowed to go home at 3.30! its tough man! heheh

To be honest, its what i need. It wasnt that I was getting bored of ceramics, I was just feeling a little 'uncreative' or stuck in a rut so to speak. This'd usually happen over the summer holidays, but then I'd get back into the swing of things at Uni and i'd be fine! Its probably because i havent really got the time to do things i WANT to do em now!? hehe.. especially get those 'Whats up Dollface?" brooches out there!

This was the poster displayed at the networking lunch, Immersion arranged with guest speakers from the 'industry'. Everyone the on the course had to prepare a poster and answer the question 'Why should you want to work with me..?'

It was actually pretty hard, but using the skills we had learnt over the course of the.. well course, I was able to put things into perspective and realise that I do actually have quite alot to offer...

HURRAH!

Here's a little sneak preview of what you can expect to see from me in 2010 as well as my large cylinder vessels (the next collection is based on children growing up too quickly!)

A range of brooches/jewellery called 'What's up Dollface?'

"Unique handmade ceramic brooches decorated with precious metal lustres and secret recipe glazes"

A range of brooches - 'All washed up!'

"Unique brooches made from broken pottery washed up on the shores of Beaumaris, Anglesey Wales"

These were inspired by a visit with my friend Cait to her grandmother's in Anglesey. We were on the beach and we kept finding pieces of broken pottery - good stuff as well. Some even had 'Wedgewood' written on the back - well 'Wedg' anyway! The pieces of pottery had obviously been dumped in the sea and some point (possibly at Liverpool?) and made its way down to the shore of Wales. Each one is totally unique!

I suppose you could call them a 'diffusion range' as they still tell as story and hold a memory and that's whats important to me!

The mug was a christmas present I made for my Dad based on the chewing gum floors larger vessels.

I'm also in talks with an internet based vintage clothing store - Vincent West Vintage to produce some merchandise and marketing for them.

So watch this space!

Was quite fun being directed and told what to do, albeit a bit embarrassing seeing as we were sat outside Central Saint Martins, on a busy London street at lunch time - we got a few funny looks - especially us lot on the ground!

Unfortunately it started to rain, but I still feel its a good photo! Ha! maybe I would say that seeing as I'm bang up the front!?...

A fellow Immersionite (the business course I'm currently attending) has kindly offered to take photos of the group, as a kind of keep-sake I suppose.

I think we were all a bit wary at first as we were told we needed to bring in a prop... but an article has just been posted on jotta (click to read), and I'm now very much looking forward to participating in this shoot!

I couldnt choose what image I liked best, so I just had to put 'em all up!

His work reminds me of David LaChapelle, one of my, well idols! - EXCITED!

Just some quick snaps from my phone (sorry about the dodgy quality..) from thirst*

This is the first time my work has been displayed under glass, which feel quite odd for me, as I want people to be able to get close and really look at the imagery and feel the surface textures. Ah well, it makes it all the more 'grown up' and museum-y and archive-y - Its all very exciting!

It just so happened, that most of the people exhibiting came from CSM this year - good year for us apparently!

Some really interesting stuff there, I didnt actually take any photos, but i particularly liked Elisa Strozyk's Wooden Textiles. I am fascinated by them, they look so tactile and lovely! (image from Eliza's CSM Showtime website)

I think I mentioned before I was showing here. It was an exhibition featuring the work of the artists in my studios - at SYNCHRO STUDIOS (no website as yet im afraid..). There is quite a wide range of artists and different work, although there is only 12 of us!

The venue was great - the old water works in Southend on Sea. The building has been changed into a gallery and artists studios by CoExist.

Anyway, here's some images from the Private view (just before we opened):

A complete surprise for me this one. Was in uni visiting the now third years and one said to me 'hey you're famous - you're in Ceramic Review'

So naturally I rushed down to the library and lo and behold, there I was! I'd completely forgotten I'd sent away any images, it was so long ago - degree show time. I suppose I assumed they'd already published the feature...

There's some good work featured, I'm off out to try and buy a copy (dont really think anywhere in Southend stocks CR.. so it may have to wait til next trip into the big smoke..) but until then, here's the hastily scanned images:

George Bamford

A few weeks ago a lady called me and said she was calling on behalf of top UK photographer George Bamford and he'd like to photograph me for a project he was currently working on.

I went to the shoot yesterday, and he was great. Wasn't anything like I expected - He was young and trendy and reallly nice! Haha, that sounds bad, like I was expecting him to be awful..but thats not what I meant.

He was really nice to talk to, really put me at ease and his studios (The IRIS Studios) were great! Turns out he studied at the American version of Central Saint Martins - Parsons?

I'm not going to say anymore, because I'm not sure if I am allowed to...

HALLOWEEN BIRTHDAY!

I know it's not really work related, but I guess its 'life related'...I've just celebrated my birthday with a Zombie Crawl on halloween around my home town of Southend on Sea!

Our make up and 'styling' so to speak, I thought was amazing, so I just wanted to show a few of the pictures off!

They were taken by my good friend Paul Gardner, who is a fab photographer (and helped me take the current photographs of my work) He also works at Bar 29, Southend on Sea as the promotions manager, hence him taking the horrific zombie photos! (check out both the Bar's and Paul's websites!)

I exhibited at the Islington Contemporary Art & Design fair over the weekend!

Luckily, I was next to my good friend and fellow Central Saint Martins ceramic graduate Ruth Babajide (trading as MERBI - check out her work HERE - its amazing!), so it wasn't so terrible or as lonely as I thought it might be!

This was my first 'proper' trade show, so it was really scary - and an eye opener actually, of how much work and preparation actually goes into these things - you cant just bowl up and expect people to buy your work - (which is slightly annoying! hehe).

It made me realise I need a smaller 'diffusion range' so to speak... so watch out for mugs, jewellery, tiles etc... as people who walk in off of the street want to come away with things..

So, ive finally started producing stuff in my studio!!

Its been a massive long slog of trial and error, with lots of spillages, noise and tears!!! But im finally egtting somewhere - slowly but surely. (i just have to keep the noise down!!!)

The first glazed pieces DIDNT EXPLODE - Hurrah!

Although the 'Rusted Decadence' glaze isnt coming out the way it did at uni, which is a shame. I'll have to look into the firing ramps. see whats going on!
